Head to head

El Salvador vs Nicaragua: El Sunzal or Popoyo?

Pick El Salvador for a walkable surf town and a gentle point. Pick Nicaragua for a hollow reef and a quieter, more remote base.

What the data says

Both hold close to their best in every month.

Popoyo runs bigger on a typical day in season: 4–6 ft against 3–5 ft. Both are surfable on nearly every day in those months.

El Sunzal is nearest SAL, and Popoyo is nearest MGA. The two breaks are about 425 km apart in a straight line. From the airport: El Sunzal, straight there, 41 min from SAL; Popoyo, a haul, 2 hr 13 min from MGA. Fares move every day, so this page prints none. The app shows the live fare from your airport for the weeks the swell is on.

Which one for your dates

The two waves

El Sunzal (El Tunco)

A consistent, mellow right point over cobble next to El Tunco, the busiest surf town on El Salvador's coast. Longboards rule at high tide and shortboards at low, and more points are a short drive along the coast.

Popoyo

A hollow A-frame reef on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, groomed on most days by the offshore wind off Lake Nicaragua. The area is rural, with lodges spread along dirt roads.

The right trip is whichever one is firing when the fare is cheap. BarrelFare watches both and tells you when they line up.

Seasons rank how often great days come; wave size and surfable days are medians. All of it is from years of wave hindcast (how we score a month). Getting there is the ground leg from the nearest airport, the same figure each spot page shows.
