Magicseaweed is gone, the cams live behind one paywall, and half the answers online are affiliate lists. Here is what each tool is actually good at, including when the honest answer is "keep Surfline."
Surfline bought Magicseaweed and shut it down in May 2023. Most "alternatives" lists compare tools that do different jobs. Sort by the job first and the choice gets easy.
First, what do you actually need?
Surfline bundles four products: cams, a spot forecast, editorial, and trip guides. No alternative replaces the bundle. Each one replaces a piece.
Need cams? Stop reading. Surfline owns the cameras. Pay them or drive to the beach. Everything else has a real alternative, and most are free.

Raw model data on a map: swell trains, wind fields, period charts. It forecasts the ocean, not the break. You translate to your spot yourself.

Best US East and Gulf Coast coverage
Free forecasts and reports, strongest on the East Coast. New England to Florida, it covers your spots with less noise than the big platforms.

Best ground truth
Not a forecast: a measurement. Within a few hours of a session, the buoy beats every model. Reading one is the most durable skill on this list.
