Ditch Plains, Montauk surf guide
The wave. Ditch Plains is a reef break over a low shelf of sand-covered pebble and rock in Montauk. It turns swell into soft, long-peeling walls, which makes it a longboard classic. Surfing here goes back decades: a 1965 contest drew more than 300 surfers, and in 1967 the town tried a surfer permit with a metal medallion.
Who it suits. Small summer days suit beginners and longboarders, with gentler waves toward Montauk Shores. Bigger, better waves break near the east-end jetty, where experienced surfers gather.
