Flying with a surfboard on Avelo Airlines

Avelo Airlines takes surfboards for a $100 fee each way.

Policy as published by the airline, verified 15 October 2026. Airline's own policy page

Board fee $100 No surfboard-only fee. Surfing equipment is a checked bag with the normal checked bag fee ($47 to $75 on the optional services page) plus the applicable oversize and overweight fees: oversize (over 62 in L+W+H) additional $100, overweight (over 50 lb) additional $100, both additional $200. A board bag is over 62 in, so expect the $100 oversize fee. Pay at the check-in counter, not online.
Size limit No board size published. General bags: 62 in L+W+H standard, 80 in L+W+H maximum, 70 lb maximum; Avelo may accept sports equipment over these limits at its discretion The surfing equipment text gives no size limit. The general rule refuses bags over 80 in L+W+H (203 cm) or 70 lb, but the same rule says Avelo may accept sports equipment over these limits at its sole discretion. That general limit does not name surfboards, so the field stays null. Bags over 62 in L+W+H pay the oversize fee, and almost every board bag is over 62 in.
Weight cap 31.8 kg

The fine print

Surfboards, kiteboards, paddleboards, wave skis and windsurf gear are accepted as checked bags. Pad the board well and put it in a board bag or a suitable container. Remove or pad the skegs and fins. Avelo can refuse the item for safety or operational reasons, and embargoes can stop oversize bags on some routes and dates. Official page: 'Surfing equipment including surfboards, kiteboards, paddleboards, wave skis and wind surfing equipment, so long as the equipment is well padded and encased in appropriate board bags or suitable containers. Any skegs or fins should be removed or be well-padded.' Contract of Carriage (effective January 21, 2026): 'Any of the items listed below may be checked, and applicable excess, oversize and/or overweight fees apply.' 'Baggage more than 80 inches (outside maximum length plus maximum height plus maximum width or 203 cm) and/or Baggage weighing more than 70 pounds (31 kilograms) will not be accepted for Carriage... Avelo may, at its sole discretion, accept musical instruments or sports equipment that exceeds these limits.' Optional services page: 'Oversize: Additional $100'.

Will your bag clear it?

Avelo Airlines publishes a length figure rather than a linear cap, so the comparison depends on your bag's own numbers. Check your exact bag: we hold the measured dimensions of 128 board bags and print a verdict per airline.

The fee is half the cost. The fare is the other half.

BarrelFare watches round-trip fares to 114 surf breaks against the forecast, and can hide the flights that will not take your board. The board fee only hurts when the fare was already bad.
