Banzai Pipeline surf guide
The wave. Pipeline breaks off Ehukai Beach Park on the North Shore of Oahu. It is a hollow left over a flat, shallow lava reef with jagged spires and caves, and Backdoor runs right off the same peak. Bruce Brown was filming Phil Edwards here in December 1961 when Mike Diffenderfer named it after a pipeline being built nearby.
Who it suits. When it is breaking, Pipeline is for experts and professionals only. Summer is calmer, but check with the lifeguard before you go in. Lifeguards are on duty all year, and winter visitors can watch the best surfers from the sand.
