Wave pool 101: every pool you can fly to

A wave pool is the one surf trip that cannot get skunked. The surf runs on a schedule. So the trip costs three things: the flight, the sessions, and a bed.

How a pool session works

Every pool on this page sells surfing the same basic way. You book a timed slot on a published calendar, at a set price, as far ahead as you like. The wave is machine made, so the session you booked is the session you get.

Where an operator publishes a length, sessions cluster around an hour, usually 55 to 60 minutes.

Most pools sell by ability. The price lists behind the table below use labels like beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert. Each label is a different wave setting, not just a different queue. Some pools split the tank and sell 30 minutes a side. A few include a board and wetsuit in the price; others rent gear separately. Surf Abu Dhabi prices by wave count instead: six to eight waves in a beginner session.

One caveat. A pool can still close for weather or maintenance. Scheduled is not the same as unconditional.

What it costs

A pool trip has three costs, and only one of them moves.

Sessions are fixed and published, so you know that number before you commit. It varies by pool, by ability level, and sometimes by side of the tank. The spread in the table below is wide, and every figure stays in the operator's own currency. We do not convert or average them, because an invented exchange rate is an invented number.

The bed is ordinary travel. Nothing about a pool changes it.

The flight is the swing variable. There is no swell window to chase, so no week of the year is better than another. Fly on the cheap one. That is the side BarrelFare watches: live fares from your airport against a 90 day baseline.

When a pool beats a strike mission

Book the pool when the point is progression. The wave repeats exactly, so a session is practice rather than a lottery. Ten attempts at the same section teach more than ten different waves.

Book the pool when your dates cannot move. A fixed week of leave and a scheduled wave fit each other. An ocean week booked months out is a bet on swell.

Book the ocean when the point is the ocean. A pool has no lineup to read, no tide, and no free extra wave. Every wave costs what the session card says it costs. On a good ocean week the waves are uncounted, and no session card matches that.

A pool guarantees the floor. The ocean owns the ceiling. Plenty of good trips are one of each, and several pools below sit an easy drive from real coast.
