Wave pool 101: how a session works and which one to book

How a pool session works

You book a timed slot at a set price, as far ahead as you like. The wave is machine made. The session you booked is the session you get.

Sessions run about an hour. Most pools sell by ability, and each label is a different wave setting, not just a different queue. Surf Abu Dhabi prices by wave count instead: six to eight waves in a beginner session.

Which session to book

• Beginner or whitewater: foam waves for standing up and steering, often with a coach in the water.
• Intermediate: green waves you ride down the line and start to turn on.
• Advanced and expert: the steeper settings, with barrel and air sections.

Between two levels? Book the lower one first. A session holds a set number of waves, and every fall on a setting above your level spends one you paid for.

Rent the board. Most pools do, and it saves the board bag fee that turns a cheap fare into an expensive one. If you bring your own, check what your airline charges for a surfboard first.

What it costs

Sessions are fixed and published. Every price below is shown in the currency it was published in. We never convert one.

When a pool beats an ocean trip

Book the pool for progression. Ten attempts at the same section teach more than ten different waves.

Book the pool when your dates cannot move. An ocean week booked months out is a bet on swell. A scheduled wave is not.

Book the ocean for the waves nobody counts. In a pool, every wave costs what the session card says. On a good ocean week you surf until your arms quit. See when each surf spot is good to pick the month.

A pool guarantees the floor. The ocean owns the ceiling. Plenty of good trips are one of each.
